The deity has been worshipped for centuries in the region and remains central to the history and identity of Kalahandi.

The temple is the foremost Shakti shrine of western Odisha and the focal point of the famous Chhatar Jatra held during Dussehra, when the ceremonial Chhatar (royal umbrella) of the goddess is taken in procession. It is a major centre of Shakti worship and community gatherings, especially during Navratri and Dussehra.
