About Maize Island Lagoon Conservation Park
Maize Island Lagoon Conservation Park is a protected wetland reserve on the Murray River floodplain near Holder in the Riverland region of South Australia. Proclaimed in 1966, it conserves a permanent lagoon, anabranch creeks, and River Red Gum woodland within the Loxton Waikerie council area. The park is notable for its floodplain ecology, waterbird habitat, and low-impact camping and kayaking opportunities in a natural riverine setting.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a quiet, natural floodplain environment centred on Maize Island Lagoon, a permanent wetland connected to the Murray River. The landscape includes lignum swamps, River Red Gum and Black Box woodland, and sandy river tracks. There are unpowered bush camping areas along the lagoon, walking tracks, and water access for kayaking and canoeing. Birdwatching is a key draw, with waterbirds, parrots and raptors common. Facilities are basic and the setting is remote and natural.
