About Lake Thetis Stromatolites
Lake Thetis Stromatolites is a saline coastal lake located about 2 kilometres inland from Cervantes in the Shire of Dandaragan, Western Australia. It is one of only a few places in the world where living marine stromatolites occur. The dome-shaped microbial structures, built by cyanobacteria, are visible along the shoreline via a boardwalk. The lake is valued for its scientific significance and offers visitors a rare opportunity to see ancient life forms in a natural setting.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a shallow, hypersaline coastal lake surrounded by low scrub and sandy terrain, with a 1.5 km loop walk and timber boardwalk leading to a viewing platform over the stromatolites. Dome-shaped stromatolite communities are visible in shallow water along the lake edge, with interpretive signage explaining their formation. The site is natural and undeveloped, with no swimming or boating, focused on sightseeing, photography and nature observation.
