Designed by Martin himself, it served as his residence and palace. Under his will of 1800, his estate funded the establishment of La Martiniere schools in Lucknow, Calcutta and Lyon. The Lucknow college opened in 1845. The building provided refuge during the events of 1857 and retains marks from that period.
