History of Kukkuteswara Swamy Temple
The temple is an ancient Shaivite shrine traditionally dated to the Eastern Chalukya period and later patronized by Eastern Ganga and other regional dynasties. Legend associates the site with Gayasura, where Lord Shiva is said to have appeared as a rooster (Kukkuta) to establish the lingam, giving the deity the name Kukkuteswara. The sacred tank Padagaya Sarovaram is linked to the Gayasura legend and to performance of ancestral rites.
Culture & Context
The temple is a major pilgrimage centre for both Shaivites and Shaktas as it houses the Puruhutika Devi shrine considered one of the Ashtadasa Shakti Peethas. It is also revered as the birthplace of Sripada Sri Vallabha, regarded as the first incarnation of Lord Dattatreya, attracting Dattatreya devotees. Maha Shivaratri, Navratri and Kartika Masam draw large gatherings for special pujas and rituals.
