History of Kolukkumalai Tea Estate
The tea estate was established in the early 1900s by British planters. The iconic two-storey timber and stone tea factory was completed in the mid-1930s (around 1930-1935) and continues to operate using original machinery imported from England during the colonial era. The estate has been producing premium orthodox tea using traditional seven-step processing methods for nearly a century.
Culture & Context
Kolukkumalai represents a living museum of colonial-era tea production, preserving traditional orthodox tea-making techniques that have remained unchanged since the 1930s. The estate is culturally significant for maintaining heritage machinery and manual processing methods, producing some of India's finest organic orthodox teas. It has received recognition including the Golden Leaf award from UPASI for tea quality.
