History of Kings Domain
Part of the original Domain set aside in the 1850s and extended in 1854 around Government House. Developed as public parkland with plantings from the 19th century. The Shrine of Remembrance was built 1928-1934 to commemorate Victorians in World War I and now commemorates all Australian service. La Trobe's Cottage, relocated to the Domain in 1963, is the former home of Victoria's first Lieutenant-Governor Charles La Trobe (1839-1854).
