Arts Centre Melbourne

Arts Centre Melbourne is Victoria's largest performing arts complex located at 100 St Kilda Road in Southbank, Melbourne, on the Yarra River. Opened in stages between 1982 and 1984, it comprises Hamer Hall, the State Theatre, Playhouse and Fairfax Studio beneath its distinctive spire. It hosts opera, ballet, theatre and concerts and houses the free Australian Music Vault, making it a central cultural landmark for visitors to Melbourne's arts precinct.

Visitors can expect a large riverside arts complex with multiple theatres and concert halls under a landmark spire, public forecourts and foyers with exhibitions and public art, the free Australian Music Vault exhibition, guided backstage tours, and ticketed performances of opera, ballet, theatre and contemporary music. The precinct includes cafes, bars and restaurants, with views over the Yarra River and Melbourne skyline, located within the Melbourne Arts Precinct.

Designed by architect Sir Roy Grounds, construction began in 1973. Hamer Hall opened in 1982 and the Theatres Building opened in 1984. The complex was built as Victoria's principal performing arts centre on former industrial land on the Yarra River, marked by its 162-metre spire which was completed in 1996 replacing the original spire structure.

Victoria's largest and busiest performing arts centre and a centrepiece of the Melbourne Arts Precinct. Home and regular venue for The Australian Ballet, Opera Australia, Melbourne Theatre Company and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and host to major festivals, contemporary music and cultural exhibitions including the Australian Music Vault.
