History of Khoo Kongsi
The Khoo Kongsi was established as the clan association for the Khoo family of Hokkien origin. The present grand hall, Leong San Tong, was completed in 1906 after an earlier building burnt down, with craftsmen brought from China. It served as clan hall, administrative centre and community gathering place, reflecting the importance of clan associations among Chinese immigrants in Penang during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Culture & Context
The site represents Hokkien Chinese clan heritage and the social organization of early Chinese communities in Penang. It showcases traditional southern Chinese architecture, craftsmanship and ancestral worship practices, and remains an active clan association. As part of George Town's UNESCO World Heritage Site, it illustrates the multicultural heritage of the city.
