About Kaja Island
Kaja Island (Pulau Kaja) is a forested river island in the Rungan River near Sei Gohong, north of Palangka Raya in Central Kalimantan. Managed by the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS Foundation) as part of the Nyaru Menteng program, it serves as a pre-release natural habitat for rehabilitated Bornean orangutans learning forest skills before release into the wild.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a boat-based experience on the Rungan River surrounding the island. The island itself is not open for landing and is viewed from the water at a distance. From a klotok or motorized boat, visitors can observe semi-wild orangutans moving through the forest canopy, along with tropical riverine forest, birdlife and river scenery. All viewing is guided and regulated to minimize disturbance to the orangutans.
