About Rungan River
Rungan River (Sungai Rungan) is a major blackwater tributary of the Kahayan River flowing through Gunung Mas Regency and Palangka Raya City in Central Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. Notable for its peat swamp forests, tea-colored acidic waters and rich biodiversity, it forms part of the greater Kahayan watershed. The river supports traditional Dayak communities, serves as a transport corridor, and is recognized for orangutan habitat and ecotourism river cruises.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a wide, slow-moving blackwater river surrounded by peat swamp forest and lowland tropical vegetation. Access is by motorized wooden boats (klotok) from jetties near Palangka Raya. The setting is natural and largely undeveloped, with small Dayak villages along the banks, dense forest, and opportunities to observe birds, primates and riverine landscapes. There are no built tourist structures on the river itself; exploration is boat-based with local guides.
