About Jones Store
Jones Store is a heritage-listed former general store located in the historic township of Newcastle Waters in the Barkly Region of the Northern Territory, on the Stuart Highway. Built in 1934 by storekeeper Ted Jones to serve drovers, station workers and travellers on the overland stock route, it is a well-preserved example of outback commercial architecture. The building forms part of the Newcastle Waters Historic Township precinct, illustrating the region's pastoral and transport history.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a preserved 1930s outback store building within the largely abandoned historic township of Newcastle Waters. The timber-framed, corrugated-iron structure stands along the main street among other heritage buildings, surrounded by open savanna. Visitors can view the exterior and interior remnants, interpretive signage, and the quiet streetscape that reflects the era when Newcastle Waters was a major droving and service centre on the Stuart Highway. The site is an open-air, self-guided heritage precinct.
