About Jatinga Rameshwara Ashokan Edicts
The Jatinga Rameshwara Ashokan Edicts are Minor Rock Edicts of Emperor Ashoka located on a granite hillock near Jatinga Rameshwara Temple, close to Brahmagiri village in Chitradurga District, Karnataka. Dating to the 3rd century BCE, the inscriptions are engraved in Brahmi script and Prakrit language on boulders. Protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, they are among the earliest written records in South India and notable for mentioning Ashoka by name and propagating his Dhamma principles.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a low granite hillock with scattered boulders bearing ancient Brahmi inscriptions, located adjacent to the Jatinga Rameshwara Temple. The site is open-air and requires a short climb over uneven rocky terrain. There are no elaborate structures, but the inscribed rocks are protected and marked. The surroundings are arid, with scrub vegetation and views of the Brahmagiri plains. Interpretation is limited on site, so the experience is primarily viewing the historic rocks and temple in a quiet rural setting.
