History of Chitradurga Fort
Chitradurga Fort was developed between the 10th and 18th centuries by successive dynasties including the Chalukyas, Hoysalas and Vijayanagara Empire. It reached prominence under the Nayakas of Chitradurga (1588-1779), especially Madakari Nayaka, who expanded the seven-walled fortifications. The fort was later captured by Hyder Ali in 1779 after a prolonged siege and subsequently held by Tipu Sultan. It is famous for its impregnable defenses and the legend of Onake Obavva who defended a breach single-handedly.
Culture & Context
The fort is culturally significant for its association with local folklore of Onake Obavva, a symbol of bravery in Karnataka, and for temples within the complex such as Hidimbeshwara Temple traditionally linked to the Mahabharata period. It represents the architectural and military heritage of the Nayakas of Chitradurga and remains an important heritage and pilgrimage site for visitors interested in Karnataka's history and temple architecture.
