History of Indra Lingam
Indra Lingam is traditionally believed to have been installed and worshipped by Indra, the Vedic deity of the east. It forms part of the Ashta Lingam tradition around Arunachala Hill, a Shaivite pilgrimage centre for over a millennium associated with the fire element (Agni). The nearby Arunachaleswarar Temple complex was expanded by Chola, Vijayanagara and later dynasties, and the Girivalam practice has been observed for centuries.
Culture & Context
Represents the eastern direction among the Ashta Dikpalakas in Hindu cosmology. Pilgrims believe worship at Indra Lingam brings blessings for prosperity, leadership and fulfillment of desires. It is an integral part of the Girivalam ritual performed clockwise around Arunachala Hill, especially auspicious on full moon nights and during the Karthigai Deepam festival.
