History of Indian Naval Maritime Museum
The museum is housed in two fortified ammunition bunkers built by the British in 1938 during World War II to store arms and ammunition due to concerns about Japanese advances. The museum itself was established in 2001 by Rear Admiral Kripal Singh to create awareness of India's maritime history and preserve naval heritage.
Culture & Context
The museum documents Kerala's rich maritime legacy, including the naval battles of the four generations of Kunjali Marakkars who resisted Portuguese colonial forces. It preserves the story of India's transition from ancient maritime trade traditions to a modern naval force, highlighting the selection of the Indian Navy's motto from the Upanishads.
