About Head of Bight Whale Watching Centre
The Head of Bight Whale Watching Centre is a seasonal cliff-top visitor centre on the Great Australian Bight in far west South Australia, about 12 km off the Eyre Highway on Yalata Aboriginal land. It overlooks the Bunda Cliffs and the Great Australian Bight Marine Park, a major breeding and calving area for southern right whales. The centre provides elevated boardwalks, viewing platforms and interpretive displays for land-based whale watching during the winter migration season.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a purpose-built visitor centre with interpretive displays about southern right whales and the Nullarbor, leading to a sealed boardwalk and two cliff-top viewing platforms overlooking the Bunda Cliffs and the Great Australian Bight. From the platforms, visitors can observe southern right whales with calves, as well as dramatic limestone cliffs up to 60 metres high, sandy dunes and ocean views. The site is exposed and windy with no beach access, focused on sightseeing, photography and whale observation.
