History of Gundert Bungalow
The bungalow was the residence of Dr. Hermann Gundert, a German missionary, scholar, and linguist who lived in Thalassery for twenty years from 1839 to 1859. It was from this bungalow that Gundert published the first Malayalam dictionary in 1859 and launched the first Malayalam newspapers, Rajyasamacharam and Paschimodayam, from a litho press set up at the premises. He also established a school here in 1839 and initiated social reform activities including English education and women's livelihood programs through tailoring classes. The bungalow was renovated at a cost of ₹2.21 crore and converted into a museum by the Kerala Government, opening to the public on May 7, 2022.
Culture & Context
The site holds immense cultural significance as the birthplace of modern Malayalam lexicography and journalism. Dr. Gundert's work here laid foundations for Malayalam language standardization and literary development. The museum preserves his legacy and includes the Hermann Hesse Library, named after Gundert's grandson, the Nobel Prize-winning author. The adjacent CSI Gundert Memorial Church, established in 1839, was the first church founded by the Basel Mission in Kerala, adding religious and historical value to the site.
