History of Govardhan Hill
Govardhan Hill is traditionally associated with Lord Krishna, who is believed to have lifted the hill to shelter the residents of Braj from prolonged rains. The site has been a centre of Braj pilgrimage for centuries, with kunds, temples and ghats developed under various rulers and later restored, including structures around Mansi Ganga and Kusum Sarovar dating to the 16th-18th centuries.
Culture & Context
Highly sacred in Hinduism, especially within Vaishnavism and Pushtimarg traditions, Govardhan Hill is worshipped as a natural form of Lord Krishna (Giriraj). Performing Govardhan Parikrama, offering Annakut during Govardhan Puja (day after Diwali) and bathing in associated kunds are considered highly meritorious. The hill is central to Braj culture and annual fairs like Mudiya Purnima and Govardhan Puja attract large gatherings.
