History of Glenelg Tram
The Glenelg Tramway opened on 14 December 1929 to replace the former Holdfast Bay steam railway, operated by the Municipal Tramways Trust. It is the only tram line to survive the closure of Adelaide's extensive tram network in the 1950s. The line was upgraded and extended through the city centre in the 2000s and now forms part of the Adelaide Metro tram network, retaining its historic corridor and significance as a continuous public transport link for over 95 years.
Culture & Context
The tram is an iconic cultural symbol of Adelaide and Glenelg, representing historic public transport heritage and the coastal lifestyle of Holdfast Bay. It provides a valued community connection between the city and the seaside and is a distinctive visitor experience associated with Glenelg's identity as Adelaide's premier beachside destination.
