History of Ghanerao Heritage Royal Village
Ghanerao was founded in 1606 by Thakur Gopal Singh Mertiya as a princely thikana comprising 37 villages. It served as a strategic buffer between the rival kingdoms of Mewar and Marwar, maintaining diplomatic ties with both Jodhpur and Udaipur states. The village was granted first-class judicial powers by Jodhpur State. The castle represents dual architectural heritage with red sandstone reflecting Jodhpur influence and white marble honoring Udaipur traditions. Ghanerao was also a renowned center for miniature painting from the early 18th to mid-19th century under rulers like Thakur Ajit Singh.
