About Garden Island Ships' Graveyard
Garden Island Ships' Graveyard is a maritime heritage site in the Barker Inlet near Port Adelaide, South Australia. Located on the eastern side of Garden Island within the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary, it contains the remains of around 25 iron and wooden vessels abandoned between 1909 and 1945. The wrecks, including barges, dredges and sailing ships, are visible in intertidal mudflats among mangroves and form South Australia's largest ships' graveyard.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a tidal, mangrove-fringed waterway with the rusted hulls and timber remains of abandoned ships partially submerged in mudflats. The site is best explored by kayak or canoe via the Garden Island Ships' Graveyard Maritime Heritage Trail, with interpretive markers. Views are also possible from the shore. The setting includes samphire, mangroves, birdlife and occasional dolphin sightings within the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary. There are no buildings on the wrecks themselves.
