History of Gaddige Raja's Tombs
The tombs were built in 1820 to commemorate Kodagu rulers Dodda Virarajendra (died 1809) and Lingarajendra (died 1820) and the royal priest Rudrappa. Constructed in Indo-Saracenic style with Islamic architectural elements such as domes and minarets, they reflect the cultural influences during the rule of the Haleri dynasty of Kodagu. The tombs house Shiva lingas and Nandi figures, indicating Shaivite tradition.
Culture & Context
The site is a significant cultural landmark of Kodagu, representing the heritage of the former Kingdom of Coorg and its royal traditions. The blend of Islamic-style architecture with Hindu Shaivite symbols illustrates the syncretic architectural style of the period. It is maintained as a protected heritage site and garden visited for its historical and architectural value.
