History of Fontainhas
Established around 1770 by Goan expatriate António João de Sequeira, Fontainhas was developed on reclaimed marshland after the decline of Velha Goa. It was patterned after Lisbon's Bairro Alto and became the oldest Latin quarter in Panaji. In 1984, UNESCO designated it as a heritage zone recognizing its unique preservation of Portuguese colonial urban planning and architecture in Asia.
Culture & Context
Fontainhas represents the enduring Portuguese cultural legacy in Goa, being one of the few areas where Portuguese architectural traditions and linguistic influences persist. The neighborhood maintains traditional practices such as annual house painting after monsoons and hosts the annual Fontainhas Festival celebrating Goan music, dance, and art heritage.
