History of Capitol Singapore
The complex conserves three historic structures: Stamford House built in 1904, and Capitol Building and Capitol Theatre both completed in 1930. Capitol Theatre was a prominent cinema in pre-war Singapore. The buildings were gazetted for conservation and later integrated through a redevelopment completed in 2015 that restored facades and interiors while adding the Arcade and Capitol Piazza, preserving Civic District heritage.
Culture & Context
Part of Singapore's Civic District heritage precinct, illustrating adaptive reuse of colonial-era commercial and entertainment architecture. The restored theatre and piazza serve as a cultural venue for film screenings, performances and community events, maintaining the area's historic role as a civic and entertainment hub.
