History of Bukit China
Bukit China was established around 1459 when Sultan Mansur Shah of Melaka granted the hill to his consort Hang Li Poh, a princess from the Ming Dynasty, and her entourage. It became the burial ground for the Chinese community in Melaka and contains graves from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Hang Li Poh's Well, built in 1459, was the main water source for the settlement.
Culture & Context
The hill is a significant heritage and cultural site for the Malaysian Chinese community, particularly the Peranakan community of Melaka. It is actively visited during Qingming Festival for ancestor veneration and houses the Poh San Teng Temple at its base. It reflects the long-standing Chinese presence and cultural traditions in Melaka.
