History of Broadway Market
Broadway was the only shopping street in Ernakulam during the early 20th century. The market originally moved from Mattancherry to Kochi when the British took over from the Dutch. Notable establishments include Valavi and Company, which started in 1899 trading in paper, tyres, and imported European goods, and White Hall Silk Palace, established in the 1920s. The area has preserved its heritage character with renovation projects undertaken under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission.
Culture & Context
Broadway serves as a major cultural and commercial hub for Kochi residents, particularly during peak festival seasons like Vishu, Onam, and Christmas when shopping activity intensifies. The market represents over a century of trading heritage and continues to be the primary destination for wholesale and retail shopping in Ernakulam, maintaining traditional bargaining culture and community shopping practices.
