History of Brimbank Park
The park lies on the traditional Country of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Kulin Nation. The Maribyrnong River valley was used for farming from the 19th century. The area was reserved as parkland in the 1970s and developed by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works, opening as Brimbank Park in 1976 to provide open space for Melbourne's western suburbs and to protect the river corridor.
Culture & Context
The park is on Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country and retains cultural significance for Aboriginal people. It serves as a major community recreation and environmental education site for Melbourne's west, with wetlands and revegetation areas highlighting the natural values of the Maribyrnong River valley.
