History of Woodlands Historic Park
Woodlands Homestead was built between 1842 and 1843 for Captain William Pomeroy Greene, a Royal Navy officer, and is one of Victoria's earliest surviving pastoral homesteads. The property illustrates early Port Phillip pastoral settlement, with original bluestone homestead, outbuildings and garden layout. The park was later part of the larger Woodlands pastoral run and was reserved as a historic park to conserve its cultural landscape and native grasslands.
Culture & Context
The park lies on the traditional Country of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Kulin Nation. It preserves a cultural landscape that reflects both Aboriginal land management and early European pastoral heritage. The homestead and Living Legends precinct demonstrate colonial architecture, pastoral life and Australia's thoroughbred racing heritage.
