History of Bimbisara's Jail
Traditionally believed to be the prison where King Bimbisara, ruler of the Magadha kingdom in the 6th century BCE and a contemporary and patron of Gautama Buddha, was imprisoned by his son Ajatashatru. The enclosure is built of large stone blocks and is associated with the early historic period of Rajagriha, the ancient capital of Magadha. Its location facing Gridhakuta Hill is linked to the tradition that Bimbisara could view the Buddha on the hill while in confinement.
