About Big Red Sand Dune
Big Red Sand Dune is a prominent 40-metre-high sand dune on the eastern edge of the Simpson Desert, about 35 kilometres west of Birdsville in the Shire of Diamantina, Queensland. It is the most famous and tallest dune in the Simpson Desert and marks the gateway to the desert for travellers. Known for its striking red colour, steep slopes and panoramic desert views, it is a popular stop for four-wheel driving, photography and sunset viewing.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a large, steep-sided red sand dune rising about 40 metres above the surrounding desert plain on the edge of the Simpson Desert. The site is an open natural area with soft sand, vehicle tracks over the crest, and an informal parking area at the base. There are no buildings or shops at the dune itself. Visitors can climb the dune on foot, drive over it in a high-clearance 4WD, take photographs of the desert landscape, and watch sunrise or sunset over the dune field. The surrounding area is flat, arid desert with spinifex and sparse vegetation.
