History of Bhujia Hill
Bhujia Fort on the hill was commissioned by Maharao Godji I in 1715 to defend Bhuj and was completed during the reign of Maharao Deshalji I. The fort played a defensive role for Bhuj town and was later occupied and enhanced during subsequent periods. The hill is also associated with the legend of Bhujang Nag, after whom the town of Bhuj is traditionally said to be named.
Culture & Context
The hill is culturally significant as the site of the Bhujang Nag Temple, revered by local communities and visited especially on Nag Panchami. The serpent deity Bhujang Nag is regarded as the protector of Bhuj and Kutch. The Smritivan Earthquake Memorial at its base commemorates the victims of the 2001 Gujarat earthquake and holds memorial significance for the region.
