History of Bhujia Fort
Bhujia Fort was built for the defence of Bhuj, the capital of the former Cutch State. Construction was initiated by Rao Godji I in 1715 and completed during the reign of Maharao Deshalji I. Built on Bhujia Hill as an outlying defence, it served as a strategic military outpost protecting the walled city of Bhuj and played a role in regional conflicts involving the Jadeja rulers.
Culture & Context
The fort is culturally significant for the Bhujang Nag Temple located on the hilltop, dedicated to Bhujang Nag, the serpent deity believed by locals to be the protector of Bhuj. The temple is associated with local legend that the city of Bhuj is named after Bhujang Nag, and remains an active place of worship, especially during Nag Panchami.
