History of Bajra Sandhi Monument
Bajra Sandhi Monument was conceived in 1981 by Balinese leaders to commemorate the struggles of the Balinese people against colonialism. Designed by architect Ida Bagus Gede Yadnya, construction began in 1987 and was completed in 2003, inaugurated on 14 June 2003 by President Megawati Soekarnoputri. The 33 dioramas inside document Balinese history from prehistoric times, through the era of kingdoms, Dutch colonial resistance including the Puputan wars, to Indonesian independence.
Culture & Context
The monument is a symbol of Balinese identity and resilience, shaped as a bajra (sacred bell used by Hindu priests) representing harmony. Its architecture incorporates principles of Tri Mandala and Balinese cosmology, and it serves as an educational and cultural centre for preserving Balinese heritage and values for visitors and local communities.
