History of Sanur Beach
Sanur is one of Bali's earliest tourism areas, developed from the 1930s with the residence of Belgian artist Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur. The beach was the landing site for Dutch forces during the 1906 intervention in Bali and for Japanese forces in 1942. Nearby Blanjong Inscription, dated 914 AD, is Bali's oldest known inscription.
Culture & Context
Sanur retains its character as a traditional Balinese fishing village where jukung boats are still used. The beach is used for Balinese Hindu rituals and ceremonies, and is culturally known for its tranquil sunrise atmosphere in contrast to the west-coast sunset beaches.
