History of Ayyappancoil Hanging Bridge
The bridge was constructed in the 2012-13 financial year by Kerala Electrical & Allied Engineering (KEL) to improve connectivity between Ayyappancoil and Kanchiyar panchayaths across the Periyar River. The older road bridge over the Periyar River is submerged by Idukki Reservoir waters for about 6 months annually, making the suspension bridge essential for year-round pedestrian access. The area has historical associations with longstanding temple traditions and regional heritage.
Culture & Context
The bridge is positioned beside the historic Sastha (Ayyappa) Temple at Mattukatta, which is considered sacred and draws devotees throughout the year. The temple is believed to have been consecrated by sage Parashurama and is one of the five sacred Sastha temples in Kerala. The bridge has evolved from a connectivity structure into a scenic landmark representing the region's natural beauty and spiritual heritage.
