About Atal Tunnel North Portal
The Atal Tunnel North Portal is the northern entrance of the Atal Rohtang Tunnel located in Sissu, Lahaul and Spiti district, Himachal Pradesh. Situated on the Manali-Leh Highway (NH-3), it serves as a critical all-weather connectivity link between Kullu Valley and Lahaul-Spiti. The portal features modern infrastructure including safety systems and landscaping, marking a significant engineering achievement that reduces travel distance and bypasses the hazardous Rohtang Pass.
Visitors guide
Visitors to the Atal Tunnel North Portal can view the architectural facade of the tunnel entrance set against high Himalayan mountains. The site includes landscaped areas, commemorative plaques detailing the tunnel's construction, and designated viewing spots for photography. History of Atal Tunnel North Portal
Inaugurated on October 3, 2020, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Atal Tunnel was renamed from Rohtang Tunnel to honor former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who initiated the project in 2000. Construction took over two decades due to challenging geology and extreme weather conditions at high altitude.
Culture & Context
The tunnel represents a transformative infrastructure milestone for the Lahaul-Spiti community, ending centuries of winter isolation caused by Rohtang Pass closures. It facilitates year-round access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities for remote Himalayan populations while boosting regional tourism and strategic defense logistics.
