Rising to about 2,460 meters, it is one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes after reawakening in 2010 following centuries of dormancy. Notable for its frequent eruptions and dramatic landscape, it is monitored by volcanology authorities and typically viewed from designated safe distances in the Karo Highlands near Berastagi.
