Marakkanam Salt-Pan Landscape
The Marakkanam Salt-Pan Landscape is an extensive coastal salt-production area near the town of Marakkanam in Viluppuram district, Tamil Nadu, along the East Coast Road north of Puducherry. Covering large tracts of backwaters and flats, it is one of Tamil Nadu's largest salt-producing zones. The geometric evaporation ponds, white salt mounds and shallow channels create a distinctive landscape reflecting traditional solar salt harvesting that sustains local livelihoods.
