Key Monastery
Key Monastery, also known as Kye Gompa, is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Spiti Valley, situated at an altitude of 4,166 meters on a hilltop near the Spiti River. Founded in the 11th century by Dromtön, a disciple of Atisha, it serves as a premier religious training center for lamas of the Gelugpa sect. The fortress-style structure houses ancient murals, rare manuscripts, stucco images, and historical weapons, reflecting centuries of architectural evolution following multiple invasions and natural disasters.
