The project was developed to provide irrigation to East Godavari district and to supply drinking and industrial water to Visakhapatnam city, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and Kakinada region. The reservoir is fed by the Yeleru River originating in the Eastern Ghats and supplemented by the Yeleru Left Main Canal from the Godavari system.
