History of Wilson Botanic Park
The park occupies a former basalt quarry operated from the mid-20th century. The City of Berwick acquired the 39-hectare site in the 1980s and transformed the excavated quarry void into lakes and gardens. Named after William Wilson, an early Berwick settler, the park was officially opened in 1992 as a community botanic garden reusing the industrial landscape.
Culture & Context
The park serves as a significant community recreation, education and horticultural resource for the City of Casey, showcasing Australian native and exotic plant collections, providing event spaces such as the amphitheatre and rotunda, and demonstrating rehabilitation of a former industrial site into public parkland.
