History of Whiteman Park
The park is named after Lew Whiteman (1903-1994), who acquired land in the area in 1939. The Western Australian Government acquired the land for conservation and recreation in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and Whiteman Park was officially opened in 1986 as a major metropolitan regional park combining natural conservation, heritage transport collections and public recreation.
Culture & Context
The park lies on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people. It preserves natural bushland and wetlands of cultural and environmental value and maintains heritage transport collections including historic trams and rail stock significant to Western Australia's transport history.
