History of West End
The area is traditionally part of the lands of the Jagera and Turrbal peoples. European subdivision began in the 1860s after the boundary of early Brisbane settlement, reflected in the name Boundary Street. It developed as a working-class suburb characterised by timber Queenslander houses, with post-war migration contributing to its diverse community and later evolution as an alternative cultural hub.
Culture & Context
West End is recognised for its multicultural community, including long-standing Greek and Vietnamese influences, and for its alternative arts, music and independent retail culture. The weekly Davies Park Market and Boundary Street precinct are central to its community and visitor identity as a creative and diverse inner-city village.
