About Wendy Whiteley's Secret Garden
Wendy Whiteley's Secret Garden is a public harbourside garden in Lavender Bay, North Sydney, New South Wales, created by artist Wendy Whiteley on disused railway land below her home. Established from 1992 after the death of her husband, artist Brett Whiteley, it transformed overgrown wasteland into a lush, terraced garden with winding paths, sculptures and harbour views. Now leased to North Sydney Council, it is maintained as a free public garden and memorial landscape.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a lush, terraced garden on a steep harbourside slope with winding paths, dense plantings, mature trees, sculptures and found objects, and seating areas. The garden offers filtered views of Sydney Harbour and is designed for quiet wandering, photography and picnicking. There are no formal lawns or visitor centre; paths are informal, with steps and uneven surfaces, and the setting is tranquil and shaded beneath Lavender Bay's residential streets.
