About Wat Samana Kottharam
Wat Samana Kottharam is an active Theravada Buddhist temple located east of Ayutthaya's city island in Khlong Suan Phlu Subdistrict, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. Dating to the late Ayutthaya period and restored during King Boromakot's reign, it is notable for its central Khmer-style prang, surrounding chedis, and well-preserved Buddha images. The temple remains an active place of worship within the Ayutthaya Historical Park area and attracts visitors for its architecture and historical atmosphere.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a restored Ayutthaya-period temple compound set in a quiet area east of the city island. The central feature is a tall prang with surrounding smaller chedis and ruined viharn foundations. Inside the main viharn is a large seated Buddha image still venerated by worshippers. The grounds are open and park-like, with active worship areas, photo opportunities of historic architecture, and a less crowded atmosphere compared to central Ayutthaya temples.
