History of Wangaratta
The area is traditionally the land of the Bpangerang people. European settlement began in the 1830s-1840s with pastoral runs, and the township was surveyed in the 1840s-1850s at the river junction, becoming a service centre for surrounding pastoral, goldfields and later tobacco and wine industries. It developed as a regional rail and administrative centre and retains heritage buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Nearby Glenrowan is associated with the 1880 siege involving Ned Kelly.
