History of Umga Temple Complex
The complex is attributed to the 6th-7th century during the Gupta and later periods, representing one of the earliest examples of Nagara temple architecture in Bihar. Built in stone, it shows early Brahmanical temple planning, with curvilinear shikharas and carved mandapas, and provides evidence of early stone temple craftsmanship in the Magadha region.
Culture & Context
An active Hindu pilgrimage centre, especially for Surya worship, with significance during Chhath Puja and other festivals. The presence of shrines to Surya, Shiva, Vishnu and Ganesha reflects the syncretic nature of Hindu worship and the continuity of religious traditions at the site for over a millennium.
