History of Ulee Lheue Beach
Ulee Lheue served historically as the sea port for Banda Aceh. The area was severely impacted by the 26 December 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, which reshaped the coastline and destroyed much of the settlement and port infrastructure. The beach and port have since been rebuilt and the area includes memorial sites related to the event.
Culture & Context
The beach reflects Acehnese coastal fishing culture, with an active fishing community, traditional boats, and local seafood culinary traditions. It is a popular communal recreation space for Banda Aceh residents, especially for family gatherings and evening leisure, within the context of Aceh's Islamic cultural norms.
