History of Udgir Fort
Built in the 12th century during the pre-Bahamani era, Udgir Fort was a strategic military base for the Marathas to maintain pressure on the Nizam. It witnessed the decisive Battle of Udgir in 1760 where Sadashivrao Bhau defeated the Nizam, leading to the Treaty of Udgir. The fort remained under Maratha control until 1818 before transferring to the Nizam and later the British.
Culture & Context
The fort is named after Hindu Saint Udaygiri Rishi whose Samadhi is enshrined 60 feet below ground level within the fort complex. The presence of both Hindu and Islamic architectural elements, including Arabic and Persian inscriptions alongside the saint's samadhi, reflects the region's syncretic cultural heritage.
